Swinger (VR Prototype)
A downloadable simulation for Android
Inspiration:
After seeing and playing with NimSony's Hybrid Spiderini, I was left kind of dissatisfied. I really liked the concept he was going for though (and I absolutely love the idea of walk-o-motion / hybrid presence) -- but no matter what I tried, it just wasn't super fun for me with his physically accurate web slinging model.
(No judgement, I just mean that I couldn't get the hang of it; maybe you'll be able to? Definitely check his stuff out if this is something that you're into!)
But so, I decided I didn't want to be left out, and that I would fool around with making a web slinging playground for myself that wasn't physically accurate... and holy crap, even though it's a bit rudimentary, it's a ton of fun! 😁
Anyway, this was mainly just for myself, but someone on Discord asked me about it, and so I uploaded a YouTube video of it...
... annnnd now people are asking for a download link. So, here you go, knock yourselves out. Donation is completely optional, but always appreciated. 🙂
Controls / How-to-"Play":
- Before playing make sure that you are at the center of your play area (recenter as necessary) and set your floor height correctly (i.e. in the Oculus home screen you can touch your controllers all the way to the ground, and that they don't clip through it).
- Index Trigger to shoot a web rope.
- Grip trigger speeds up the web rope:
- If you're falling this could make it hit a surface much sooner so that you don't hit the ground; or if it's already attached to a surface, this will cause you to reel in, and once you get the hang of it, you can use this to slingshot yourself around various bits of geometry).
- Stick movement -- one of them snap turns and the other does smooth walking movement.
- Body movement will move your physics colliders with you (e.g. you can physically walk and jump off edges of platforms, or walk up stairs, etc. as shown in the video) and it should all work, providing you have a big enough play space.
- Climbing:
- Climbing is a bit of a hack, but it worked well enough that I never bothered to fix it. Basically just shoot a web rope at point blank to a surface (using grip and trigger) and it just kind of works.
- When your web is attached to a surface (for any reason, even swinging), your collider is shrunk to fit the upper half of your body only. This makes it easy to climb over the tops of ledges, etc. -- Just make sure you shoot the ground on the top side and pull yourself over.
Known Bugs:
- There seems to be some bug here where if you're really far from the center of your play area that the physics don't work right -- a little bit offset is usually okay, but if the physics seem completely wonky, try recentering yourself -- if that doesn't work, exit the app, recenter, and then restart it? 🤷🏻♂️
- There is an issue with the stairways, that the friction is wrong for their angle, and you might slowly slide down them if you remain perfectly still in the middle of one.

Imp am a big fan of this prototype, the swinging mechanics are much better than other swinging games I've played. You feel like a pendulum, and the faster/reel option allows for some very fun maneuvering. like the other commenter I'd love to see a second release with a larger map, and possibly sound effects. This is a super fun prototype and regardless of a second release, I will be playing this often
Man, this is really excellent--I'm surprised there aren't more comments on here. But I've had this nearly since release and enjoy hopping into it a few times a week at least. You really nail the swinging mechanic better than almost anyone, and I would really love to see a release with a much larger area to move about in. I'm sure it's not your main focus or anything, but if you moved into actual game-with-objectives territory, I'd be thrilled. Thanks again for the awesome creation!
Thanks, that’s really encouraging!
